The King Shepherd

“Shepherd Your people with Your scepter, the flock of Your possession…” (Micah 7:14)

Micah’s illustration describes God as the Shepherd, but also as the King with His scepter.

It is hard to imagine a king taking the time to work with sheep.  It’s a tedious, smelly business caring for sheep… not the sort of work royalty would typically humble themselves to do. It’s not always easy dealing with sheep.  We are defenseless, clumsy, and prone to wandering off.  Lots of work that requires constant vigilance and care.

And yet, that is our God.  All the authority and all the humility combined together.  He’s the boss, but the best kind of boss – the one that isn’t afraid to get His hands dirty or to consider the needs of His people.  He’s a king with a shepherd’s heart.
