Reliance

“…never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 10:20)

Israel had lost its way by the time Isaiah penned these words.  As a nation, they had become enamored with the false gods from the nations around them and become deceived by the glitter of wealth, power, and seduction.  God would cleanse them through discipline.  He would give them over to the nations they loved so much and the idolatry they had embraced.

And after seeing what sin did to them and experiencing the consequences of a life without God, the remnant that would return would never again rely on these things.  Sometimes, God lets us experience the full effects of our sins so that we learn to abhor them as we ought and come to lean on Him and not our own understanding.
