In Their Youth…

“Let our sons in their youth be as grown-up plants, and our daughters as corner pillars fashioned for a palace.” (Ps 144:12)

The LORD never intended for our youth to be years spent in frivolous indulgence. The psalmist’s prayer is that God would make the young men and women of His people mature beyond their years and responsible enough to provide like grown plants and hold up virtue like pillars hold up a palace.

Young is not synonymous with useless. We should give our young people responsibilities and charge them with work so that they may see the benefits of such things and enjoy the blessings of feeling needed and useful. We should use them early and often so that they may grow even more and find their place in this world as people of purpose and character. If we wait until they are older, then we will have waited too long.

“I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” (1 Jhn 2:14)
