The Things We Hand Down

“Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.” (Ps 22:10)

Every child is made in the image of God and is given the breath of life by Jehovah Himself. He is the Father of our spirits (see Heb 12:9).

And yet, many of us don’t realize our spiritual heritage until we are much older. Some don’t recognize it even then. What a hole is left in our lives when we do not know where we come from! Our souls long to understand our ancestry and comprehend our place within the cosmos, and we wander blindly for years in this life until that piece of the puzzle is properly affixed into its place.

What a blessing to raise your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (see Eph 6:4). Children raised to know their God know their place within the universe. They know they are loved and valued and precious in His sight. They have meaning and their life has meaning. They see the value of right and wrong because a right God made them and they can understand their life in the context of the great cosmic battle between good and evil, as well as the value of their life seen through the horrific cost of the cross.

To know God from the very beginning. What a blessing we can bestow on the next generation!

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” (2 Tim 1:5)
