The Sheep of His Hand

“For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.” (Ps 95:7)

Shepherding a flock is a hands-on task. The shepherd walks amongst the sheep checking their bodies for wounds. He is acquainted with both the strongest and the weakest of the flock. He considers their needs in order to properly move them from one location to another so that they don’t overgraze an area and starve the next year and as he moves them he considers the safest route and goes ahead along the same path they must tread.

We aren’t His cattle – we are His sheep. The analogy God chose is beautiful and touching all at once.

“For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Pet 2:25)
