The Benefit of Age

“But he [Rehoboam] forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him.” (1 Kings 12:8)

It is called ‘peer pressure’ for a reason.  When King Rehoboam listened to his peers, it wasn’t just because the external pressure of his friends got to him – it was the internal pressure he had to take their advice because it was already the course of action most appealing to him.

Those at the same stage of life as us are likely to tell us what we want to hear because their solutions are the solutions that we are already hoping for.  Their perspective is our perspective.

Wisdom isn’t found in surrounding yourself with more of the same – look for those who have already been successful and genuinely listen to how they got their.  In short, find someone older.  They’ve already survived the stupid you are trying to avoid and lived to tell about it.  Age has not made you equals in this respect; leverage their experience.
