Money is a Tool

proverbs-13-22

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” (Pr 13:22)

Two principles are at play in this Proverb.

  1. It is good to save for your children (and even your grandchildren!).  Good stewardship of our finances is pleasing to God and shows character.  A righteous man understands money is a tool to help people, not an end unto itself.
  2. Contrary to popular mythology, wickedness rarely leads to sustained wealth and a legacy of financial well-being.  Nobody wants to keep doing business with someone who cheats them and has no integrity.  A man that gains wealth by sin won’t keep it because he doesn’t have the selfless character to manage it long-term.

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
