“But My people did not listen to My voice, and Israel did not obey Me. So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, to walk in their own devices.” (Ps 81:11-12)
Stubbornness is the dogged determination to not change your attitude or position on something. In other words, if we are determined to make stupid choices, God won’t stop us. That’s how free will works.
We shouldn’t confuse God’s respect for our liberties with apathy. He will let us do the wrong thing and He will let us suffer the consequences… and it will break His heart every second. Our freedom costs us and Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed.” (Isa 53:4-5)
