How to Measure Your Worth

“Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they did not know the LORD.” (2 Sam. 2:12)

How do we measure our self-worth? Self-esteem and self-worth are big topics and there are shelves of books from reputable scholars on the subject.

The Bible covers it in one sentence.

Worthless = Does not know God.
Valuable = Knows God.

Let that sink in. Our worth is determined by our knowledge and intimate closeness to our Creator. When our lives are molded by His guiding Word, then we fulfill our function and have worth. If we buck His authority and live without Him in our lives, we are worthless to Him and to others.

A life of worth is a life that is bound up in the will of the Lord. Jesus prayed “Thy will be done.” (Matt. 26:42), James taught us to pray “If the Lord wills we will do this or that…” (Jas. 4:15), and Eph. 5:17 commands, “Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

Self-worth is only found when you fulfill your purpose and your purpose is found in God’s Word.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (2 Tim. 3:16)
