“A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, but even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.” (Pr 12:10)
If you look at the condition of a man’s livestock, you can see a glimpse into the rancher’s heart. The man who mercilessly beats his dog has a character problem. We should not elevate animal’s to the same level as humans (such as giving more protection to eagle eggs than to unborn children), but that doesn’t mean we are free to abuse them either.
If how we treat those who are under our authority reflects our true nature, then you don’t get more completely under authority than the animals we possess. So feed your fish regularly – it’s good for you.
