Are You Entertained?

“For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.” (Ps 5:4)

If you peruse the evening television offerings, you can get a quick sense of what is deemed appropriate entertainment for grownups, and you also begin to understand that we delight in wickedness. What we call entertainment is far too often a glorification of evil. Crude humor that degrades others, objectification of women and men that dehumanizes people, violence that fills our minds with bloodlust and glorifies vengeance, and the mockery of God’s design of marriage and family.

This isn’t entertainment – it is brainwashing. If we aren’t careful, we will be known as the generation that trained our hearts to delight in wickedness and dwell in evil. The era that lead to the heartless human who had no love of truth or goodness because we had become desensitized to sin.

Never before have the words of Philippians 4:8 been more practical advice:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Php 4:8)
